This is a super general, primer post if you’re new to marketing and want to understand what it is. “Marketing” is an umbrella term for lots of different functions.
Many people think marketing is an afterthought – just a creative, fluffy role. It definitely is rewardingly creative, but with technology and data at our disposal, this is an increasingly creative, strategic, and analytical career that adds real bottom-line value to companies.
When I began thinking about career options, mentors told me to avoid marketing roles because they’re the first to be squeezed out when the budget gets tight. That may have been true in the Mad Men era, but today’s consumers expect valuable, transparent communication at all times. Smart companies that are worth working for know that marketers are the front-lines – the ones to communicate with and listen to consumers. Without marketers, companies don’t understand what their community needs.
Marketing is a very large concept, so I’ve elaborated on roles in and related to marketing. I’ve come into contact with different types of marketing through interviews, my friends, the industry, and my own jobs. You’ll be a valuable hire if you know how to do your specific job really well, and also have general knowledge on how the whole marketing department works.
